Big Finish Folly, Part 106f – Absolute Power, by Jamie Anderson
Two thousand years ago, all civilisation on the planet Teymah was wiped out in an AELE – an Anomalous Extinction Level Event. Now, the galactic entrepreneur Lyam Yce hopes, at last, to learn the reason why the ancient Teymahrians went extinct – by funding a huge archaeological dig.
While the Doctor probes a strange sphere found by Yce’s diggers, his companion, former Bletchley Park cryptographer Constance Clarke, agrees to help translate symbols written in the lost ancient language of the Teymahrians. And soon, they’ll learn that ancient Teymah’s secrets were best left buried deep beneath its shifting sands… (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 106e – Order of the Daleks, by Mike Tucker
We’re still on our semi-regular peregrinations around the previous incarnations here, before carrying on with the Seventh Doctor’s Main Range adventures. And the Dalek stories are turning up like buses at the moment. Ol’ Sixey and Mrs Clarke feature against the most intriguing Dalek concept we’ve seen in the last few years…
In the Galactic Census, idyllic Strellin is recorded as a Grade Three planet – its inhabitants possessing neither advanced technology, nor knowledge of other worlds. Accordingly, Strellin is protected: landings by off-worlders are strictly prohibited. Unless, of course, those off-worlders are officials of the Galactic Census itself, come to investigate the origin of a mysterious sub-space signal – a signal no native of Strellin should be able to send…
Breaking all local by-laws, the time-travelling Doctor and his companion L/Wren Mrs Constance Clarke (AWOL) have only just landed on Strellin, too. But they and the Census officials aren’t the only off-worlders to have come here. Inside a nearby monastery, the monks of the reclusive Brotherhood of the Black Petal are guarding a strange and terrible secret. Something that might bring disaster not just to Strellin, but to every civilised world in the galaxy! (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 130 – The Brink of Death (Last Adventure: 4), by Nicholas Briggs
And at last the Valeyard’s scheming comes to fruition – rising, with new power, from the dark places where he has been lurking, he has fooled Mel into believing that he is the Doctor, while the Doctor has been stranded in an off-shoot of the Matrix. An off-shoot that is about to be decommissioned and wiped by junior Timelord technician Genesta… (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 116a – Stage Fright (Last Adventure: 3), by Matt Fitton
The Doctor takes Flip to Victorian London, to visit his old friends Jago and Litefoot, and discovers that Henry Gordon Jago is feeling rather flush – his entire theatre is closed for a private hire! But the man treading the boards is no ordinary actor – re-enacting all of the Doctor’s regeneration scenes so far, with the help of local talents, is one Mr Yardvale… With Flip called in as an understudy, it could be time to draw the curtain on this performance, and there’s unlikely to be an encore… (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 103a – The Red House (Last Adventure: 2), by Alan Barnes
The Doctor and Charley arrive on an island populated by werewolves. But these are not your normal, garden variety werewolves – oh no, this is an endangered species. And the Doctor’s presence, coupled with the sinister machinations of Doctor Pain in the Red House on top of the hill, just made their life expectancy that much shorter… (more…)
That latest trilogy with new companion Constance Clarke leads naturally into the first story in the box set that details the Sixth’s Doctor’s previously unseen regeneration into Sly Seven. I was in two minds about covering this as part of the Folly but, well, in for a penny, in for a pound, so to speak. It’s not like the chronology isn’t already complicated beyond comprehension – the Sixth Doctor is splattered all over the vortex like an n-dimensional Jackson Pollock. What I’ve done is try to locate each piece of this particular box set in appropriate parts of the timeline, with varying degrees of success. You can judge my efforts against those, in a more complete fashion, of Craig Brawley in the (somewhat elitist) Big Finish Listeners group on Facecrack.
But, on with the show!
Big Finish Folly, Part 106d – The End of the Line (Last Adventure:1) by Simon Barnard & Paul Morris
The 8.15 is late. As usual. But in an infinite universe, with infinite possibilities, somewhere there’s an 8.15 that made it on time. But that means there’s also an 8.15 lost in deep fog, onboard which the passengers are busy killing each other… Guess which 8.15 the Doctor has just found… (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 106c – Shield of the Jotunn, by Ian Edginton
When a blast of artron energy brings the Tardis to Earth in 2029AD, the Doctor finds snowstorms and a Viking burial mound in Arizona. But all is most definitely not what it seems here – behind the nano-tech environmental control experiments of Dr Hugo Macht is a piece of technology that, rather than helping to save the world, could end up destroying it. It’s up to Constance Clarke and the Doctor to work out the story of the Shield of the Jotunn – and to hold back an eternal winter if they can… (more…)
Big Finish Folly, Part 106b – Planet of the Rani, by Marc Platt
Never one to knowingly read his own mail, the Doctor isn’t aware that old foe The Rani is – after a century in prison – up for parole. His presence is required at the penitentiary on Teccaurora. But when the Doctor and Mrs Clarke arrive onsite, they quickly realise that The Rani has been waiting for them. For decades. She wants to return to her experiments on Miasimia Goria – and she wants to use the Doctor’s mind to fuel her return… Miasimia Goria will never be the same again… (more…)
So, we’re back off hiatus. The break was due to a number of things mounting up – not least of which was the launch of my own epic fantasy novel (available now in paperback and e-formats, I’ll have you know), appearances at conventions around that, and dealing with a few other non-Who issues besides. On a more related note, my stubborn and frankly quixotically stupid desire to run this review blog in as strict a chronological order as possible hit a serious brick wall at the crossover point between the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. The release schedules meant that pressing ahead would have seen reviews jumping back and forth between the Sixth and Seventh Doctors; rather than do that, I decided to wait until all the Sixth Doctor releases featuring new companion Constance Clarke were made available, piling up Seventh Doctor reviews in the meantime. On the plus side, this does mean I have more than a few lined up and ready to go.
Big Finish Folly, Part 106a – Criss Cross, by Matt Fitton
And here we go with the first! And yet another new companion for the Sixth Doctor! It’s 1940s Britain, everybody’s off to war, and in the bleak, cold huts of Bletchley Park, an inhuman intelligence directs operations, desperately trying to decode enemy signals. While MI6 agents close in, Mrs Constance Clarke finds herself roped into the search for Agent Spark. Soon, she’ll be transported onto a German submarine, battle against an alien waveform, and mix with double agents. But it’s the inhuman intelligence at the heart of Bletchley who might be able to help find her missing husband – an inhuman intelligence called… The Doctor. (more…)
We continue the Locum Doctors trilogy, celebrating Big Finish’s 200th Main Range story, with a tale that matches Ol’ Sixey with the classic Troughton-era companions Zoe and Jamie – and with an auld enemy who made several appearances over the course of that era…
Big Finish Folly, Part ℑ – Last of the Cybermen, by Alan Barnes
It’s a gigantic monument – a massive cyber-head, located out in the fringes of known space. Ten years after the end of the great Cyber Wars, Zennox and her team have come to excavate and explore the place. The Doctor has come too, drawn by a message that doesn’t make sense. When he realises the danger he is in, he flees back to the Tardis – but the Doctor Jamie and Zoe are expecting has been replaced by a fiery chap in multi-coloured clothing… (more…)
